About 2 1/2 years ago I had Rippa as a guest and we discussed comics, pop culture, politics, etc. I recently watched it again and everything we discussed is just as relevant as it was then, if not even more so.

I was watching a stream where they were talking about if comics and movies should avoid the “culture war”. The discussion could go in circles depending on who your talking to, but I honestly don’t feel that they can or should.

It’s actually something they we discussed in this video I’m sharing.

Comics and movies are storytelling mediums, and art forms. These things are inherently baked into CULTURE. The culture war is simply an ongoing battle of how we all get along in the world, as nobody really wants it to tip in any particular direction. We all exist and these mediums help us express how we feel, have felt, and have maybe even been treated, also how we see others, and feel about the thing we see around us. Individual insights into the Human Experience if you will.

These things help shape the way people think and view the world, even if it’s just escapist entertainment. That’s why these things can’t be overlooked, or disregarded as not part of it, or shouldn’t address these issues.

The real issue is how it’s handled/written. As we all know, you don’t have to beat someone over the head, or preach to them.

All this isn’t to say that every book/movie has to have some sort of real world message, or that they all have to be devoid of it. But one thing we certainly can’t do is have these mediums acting like the problems don’t exist. We just need more balance in the views, where most things mainstream seem to be very liberal.

    Enough flapping my fingers.

I’ve thought about editing this stream down into some smaller clips for people to watch, but here’s a link if y’all would like to check it out.

There’s nothing wrong with putting politics in comics. Some of the best stories I’ve read cover political issues. My stance has always been that our heroes should rise above politics. Putting a hero on either side of a political argument makes them no different from us; I’ve always viewed heroes as being more than us, exemplifying how much better we could be as people.

Interesting post. I’ll check out your video soon.

I don’t think people would have such a big problem with politics being in comics or other media if it wasn’t so one-sided.

How much more entertaining could some of the banter be if main characters were on different political sides? I just think of the MCU hulk and Thor banter and see so much potential for a much more humorous dynamic if one were a liberal and the other a conservative, or even if hulks politics changed with him when he turns into the hulk.

agreed, culture is made of the art that we produce

it not only reflects the society we live in but passes on that culture to those that consume the art
