There is this concept in the art space called “doing your homework”. This concept follows the idea that if you are a creator or consumer in a particular art space you should look into artists who have come before and inspired the current generation. A great example of this that I have recently discovered is the inspiration behind many comic book heroes today. The inspiration for comics came from pulp fiction; a prominent author in pulp fiction is Robert E. Howard (he created iconic characters like Conan the Barbarian and Solomon Kane). Another example of this is the Greek myths. They show great feats of strength and heroism, feats that are prominent in comic books. Should the new generation and new renaissance look into where the culture came from? Should the past be left behind? Is it important to look back at the history of culture and art?

Every artist has their inspiration and that’s really true for artists making work today since there’s so much art that’s been made over the centuries. I can say anything I make creatively is going to draw on the art that I’m familiar with and fits the theme of what I’m going for.

I like to say that there aren’t really any new stories, but that the old stories can be told in different ways. We are imitators by nature and imitating good stories I think is also good.

true, the telling of the story is where the art really lies
